Heart of Woman
My 1987 exhibition at University of Illinois - Ft. Wayne
I created thirteen heart-shaped vessels cut with an infinity symbol, a form that came to me in a dream. These stood on 4′ tall pedestals placed in a circle. On the walls hung my watercolors, one of them pictured here. Inspiration and Reason is 48″ x 48″ on 300 pound watercolor paper.
Artist Statement
This exhibition expressed my joy of being an artist and my love of horses, two of my life long passions. each exhibited on a tall narrow pedestal,
First I created in a slab mold from an image of the infinity symbol cutting through the top of a heart which came to me in a dream.
I created built thirteen clay sculptures. Once out of the form with the two sides joined together, I sculpted the surface of some with a finish of glaze, requiring multiple firings to achieve the desired surface and color.
With other forms, I added figures and pattern using colored clay slips. All were placed on tall narrow pedestals in a circle at the center of the one person exhibition.
On the walls surrounding the circle of hearts, I hung my watercolors and a few prints.
The central theme was highlighted in Inspiration and Reason, a watercolor on a 4′ square of watercolor paper. The imagery, an angel on one side, and two horses on the other with a dove in their intertwining, transparent tails, represents the right and left side of my brain respectively. The dancing figure between them expresses my joy that my scientific brain and my creative brain are working in unison, helping me overcome my insecurities and thus pursue my passion of living the life of an artist.
